How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Choose Businesses

Query fan-out, Search eligibility, the Local Pack relationship, and the structured-data claim Google actually contradicts.

Make the business easy to identify

Start by making the business facts consistent and plainly stated. Use the real business name, service descriptions, locations served, contact details, hours and category consistently across the website and the Google Business Profile. Keep the profile verified and current, and correct changes promptly. Google says complete and accurate profile information helps local matching, and its local guidance describes results as mainly driven by relevance, distance and prominence, with reviews, links and positive ratings contributing to prominence. This does not prove that a complete profile will be named in an AI Overview. It does establish that local visibility depends on Google understanding what the business does and where it operates. Avoid keyword-stuffed business names and locations that do not exist.

Publish evidence, not generic filler

Google's own guidance for generative AI features recommends unique, non-commodity content that adds information beyond common knowledge. For a local service business that might be a clear explanation of how a job is assessed, what the customer should prepare, which constraints affect price, or what was actually observed on a completed project. First-hand experience and expert explanation are more useful than a page assembled from competitors' wording. Write for a customer arriving directly, not for an imagined parser. A useful test is whether the page contains specific facts, examples, qualifications, photographs, process detail or original analysis that a generic model could not safely invent. Do not mass-produce near-identical city pages merely to capture every query variation.

Use E-E-A-T carefully

E-E-A-T means experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, and Google explicitly states it is not itself a specific ranking factor. Treat it as a quality framework, not a score an agency can calculate. Show who created or reviewed important content, give accurate credentials where they matter, explain relevant first-hand experience, and cite evidence for consequential claims. Keep author pages and About information truthful. For health, financial, legal or safety topics, accuracy and trustworthy expertise matter especially. Do not invent authors, credentials, testimonials, awards or case studies. The practical goal is to make the business and its content easier for a customer and for Google's systems to trust, while avoiding the false claim that Google assigns a published E-E-A-T weight to AI Overview selection.

Implement structured data without overselling it

Use LocalBusiness structured data when it accurately describes a real business location or service organization. Google documents name and address as required for Local Business rich-result eligibility, recommends the most specific subtype, and suggests useful details such as geo coordinates and opening hours. Validate the markup and make sure it matches what a visitor can see on the page. Do not add hidden claims, fake ratings or unsupported service areas. Most importantly, Google states that structured data is not required for generative AI Search and that there is no special AI schema to install. Structured data improves machine-readable clarity and can support certain Search features, but it is not evidence of an AI citation guarantee. Keep the implementation accurate, modest and tied to visible information.

Answer the questions customers actually ask

AI Mode and AI Overviews handle longer, more complex and follow-up questions well. Create genuinely useful pages covering service fit, process, timing, preparation, limitations and location-specific constraints. Organise with descriptive headings and readable prose, but do not chase a preferred word count or chop content into artificial fragments. Google says there is no ideal page length and no requirement to create special AI files or write in an unnatural style. Include images or video when they genuinely help. Keep important information in crawlable text, link related pages internally, and avoid pages whose only purpose is to repeat a keyword with little added value. Also check your preview controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what can appear in Search and AI formats.

What is documented, and what we are inferring

Documented by Google: generative features use the Search index, core ranking systems, grounding and query fan-out; pages need ordinary Search eligibility; Google recommends helpful original content, sound technical access, accurate Business Profile data, and structured data that matches visible content. For local Search specifically, relevance, distance and prominence are the main categories. Not documented: the formula for selecting one business over another inside an AI response, any citation score, a minimum review count, a required number of third-party mentions, or a fixed relationship between Local Pack position and AI naming. It is a reasonable inference that clear business facts, local relevance, trustworthy evidence and strong Search eligibility create more opportunities to be retrieved. It is not reasonable to present that inference as a guaranteed ranking recipe.

Measure visibility as an experiment

Do not report an "AI ranking" as if it were a stable number. Record the exact query, the city or searcher context, the date, the device, whether an AI Overview or AI Mode response appeared, which businesses were named, and which links were cited. Repeat important queries, because generated responses vary. Compare direct local searches against informational and hybrid questions, since independent research has observed these producing different feature prevalence. Track calls, form submissions, direction requests and qualified visits rather than clicks alone. Google states that AI-feature traffic is included in Search Console reporting, and current guidance points to generative-AI performance reporting where available. Independent studies can reveal patterns, but their samples are not universal rules. Use observations to choose the next test, not to claim an undisclosed Google weight.
