How Grok Decides Which Businesses to Recommend
Live X and web retrieval, date and engagement controls, and why an uncited answer does not prove nothing was read.
Start with the retrieval model
With search available, Grok is not limited to a fixed training snapshot. xAI documents a Web Search tool that searches the web in real time and browses pages, plus an X Search tool that retrieves posts, users and threads. Grok then writes an answer from what it found. Visibility therefore begins with being retrievable for the wording a customer uses. Put the business name, category, service area, contact details and core services in ordinary text on the official site. Use a title and opening paragraph that state what the business does and where it operates. Publishing something does not automatically make Grok select it: search access is documented, but recommendation ranking is not.
Make the business unambiguous
A small business should remove avoidable ambiguity before trying to earn AI visibility. Use one consistent public name, address or service area, phone number, URL and description everywhere the business is represented. Give each important service its own page or clearly labelled section, and state who the service is for. Include the city or region where location matters. This is preparation for retrieval rather than a published Grok ranking formula. Grok can search by keyword and by semantic meaning on X, so the language should cover both the formal business description and the phrases customers actually use. A VA can audit the official site and public profiles monthly for contradictions, duplicate names, old locations and broken pages.
Use X as a live evidence surface
X is a first-party retrieval surface for Grok, not merely a place to announce company news. xAI documents keyword search, semantic search, user search and thread fetching. A business can therefore maintain an identifiable account, describe its services in plain language, answer customer questions, and link to detailed pages. Keep posts factual and specific rather than repeating slogans. Where appropriate, show service context, location, availability or a completed project without exposing private customer information. Do not buy or manufacture activity. xAI's documentation says X keyword search can be sorted by Top or Latest and can use advanced operators, but it does not say follower count or any engagement number guarantees inclusion. Treat social activity as evidence that may be retrieved, not as a promised ranking lever.
Plan for recency without deleting history
Grok's live-search positioning makes current information useful for time-sensitive questions. X Search supports explicit date ranges, and xAI describes live web and X results as reflecting what is happening now. Keep hours, prices, service availability, event dates, inventory and policies current on the official site. Date-stamp announcements where timing matters, and update or replace pages containing expired offers. Preserve stable pages for evergreen facts so the business remains identifiable over time. Check whether old pages contradict current information, and maintain redirects when URLs change. Do not claim that freshness always outranks authority: xAI publishes no recency decay function or universal freshness boost. Stale information makes a retrieved answer less useful; that is the safe conclusion.
Build pages that can support a recommendation
When Grok names a business, a user may ask why it was included or whether it fits their need. Make that answer supportable on the page itself. State the service, location, audience, qualifications, constraints, booking method and relevant proof in clear sections. Link to primary documentation such as menus, pricing, policies, case studies or appointment pages. Avoid vague claims such as the best unless the page explains the basis and the claim is defensible. Web Search can browse pages, and xAI's citation system records URLs encountered during successful searches. That does not mean every page will be cited, and a citation is not an endorsement. The practical goal is a stable, relevant source Grok can inspect and a customer can verify.
Understand what citations and links mean
xAI documents two citation layers, and the distinction is genuinely useful. The citations attribute contains a comprehensive list of URLs encountered during search, including sources the final answer may never mention. Inline citations are markdown-style links inserted into the answer, and xAI says the model decides when and where to include them. So an uncited answer does not prove that no source was consulted, and a cited page does not prove that it ranked first or caused the recommendation. When checking visibility, save the exact prompt, date, answer and linked sources. Review whether your own page, a reputable third-party page, and relevant X posts were actually consulted. Report links as evidence of what happened in that run, not as a permanent ranking position.
Test prompts the way a customer would ask
Use repeatable, neutral prompts to learn what Grok currently retrieves. Test the business name, service plus town, problem plus town, and comparisons such as options for a particular need in a particular area. Run the same prompts on several dates and record whether Grok used Web Search, X Search, both or neither, wherever that is visible. Capture the answer, the business names, the cited URLs and any factual errors. Change one variable at a time, such as adding a date range or a service term. xAI says the model chooses its own queries and may call X-search functions repeatedly, so results vary by prompt and run. A few observations cannot establish a ranking factor; use them to find missing facts and contradictions.
What is documented, and what we are inferring
Documented by xAI: live Web Search and X Search; X Search covering keyword, semantic, user and thread retrieval; date, handle and search controls including Top or Latest ordering and advanced operators; the model choosing its own queries and tool calls; and citations exposing encountered URLs alongside model-controlled inline links. Inferred: that clear business identity, relevant service language, current facts and credible public evidence improve the chance that a retrieved source supports naming the business. xAI has published no weights for freshness, engagement, followers, reviews, backlinks, domain authority, sentiment or local prominence, and no small-business threshold or guarantee. Label case-study observations as observations and keep them separate from verified platform behaviour, because the gap between the two is where bad advice lives.
