How AI Citations Work

When someone asks ChatGPT "Who is the best electrician in Denver?" — ChatGPT doesn't search the web in real-time. It draws on its training data, which includes business directories, review sites, and web content. The more consistently your business appears across these sources, the more likely you are to be cited.

The Citation Pyramid

Tier 1 — Foundation (Do These First)

  • Google Business Profile (complete 100%)
  • Bing Places for Business
  • Apple Maps Connect
  • Yelp Business

Tier 2 — Data Aggregators (These Feed Hundreds of Sites)

  • Data Axle (formerly Infogroup)
  • Neustar Localeze
  • Foursquare
  • Factual/Narrative Science

Tier 3 — Industry-Specific Directories

  • Angi (home services)
  • Houzz (home improvement)
  • Avvo (legal)
  • Healthgrades (medical)
  • Justia (legal)

NAP Consistency Rules

Your Name, Address, and Phone must be identical across every listing:

  • Use the exact same business name (no abbreviations)
  • Use the exact same address format (spell out "Street" vs "St" — pick one and stick to it)
  • Use the same phone number format (with or without dashes — be consistent)

Target: 30+ Citations in 90 Days

Week 1-2: Complete Tier 1 (4 listings) Week 3-4: Submit to data aggregators (4 listings, feeds 200+ sites) Month 2: Add 10 industry-specific directories Month 3: Add local directories (Chamber of Commerce, local news sites)
