Prompt testing means manually asking AI engines the same questions your customers would ask — and recording whether your business appears in the answers.
Frequency: Run tests at the beginning of each month. Platforms: Test on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Prompt count: 20 minimum (50 for Authority tier).
Create prompts in three categories: direct recommendation prompts (Who is the best X in Y?), problem-based prompts (I need X in Y — who should I call?), and comparison prompts (What are the top X companies in Y?).
For each prompt record: which AI platform, the exact prompt, whether your business was mentioned, your position if mentioned, which competitors appeared, and the date.
0-5 mentions: Foundational work needed. 6-10: Progress happening. 11-15: Strong visibility. 16-20: Dominant visibility.
